The metric
AI Authority, the metric that says where to start
You know the sources the AIs lean on for your market. AI Authority tells you which one to work on first, engine by engine, on a scale everyone reads the same way.
Definition
AI Authority (AA) is a metric from 0 to 100 that says how much a given AI engine leans on a given source, where 100 is the source that engine cites most. It is a count of detections over a rolling 30-day window, scaled against the leading source of the entire corpus of sources Epovest knows, and it is computed separately for each engine.
How the number is computed
AI Authority is a count put on a scale, and nothing else: the detections of a source, measured against the detections of the source that leads its engine. There is no constant to calibrate and no weighting to arbitrate, which is what makes a movement attributable.
The scale, in one picture
AA = 100 x detections of the source / detections of the engine leader
The source this engine leaned on most over the window. It sets the 100, and it is drawn from the entire corpus.
The engine leaned on it around six tenths as often as on its leader. Firmly in the part of the list worth working.
Cited regularly, well below the head. Often a specialist site, and often the easiest to be quoted in.
- Over every source Epovest knows
- The 100 that sets the scale is the leading source of the WHOLE corpus, every survey run on the platform, and not the top of the list you happen to be looking at. A client reads the AA of the sources their own surveys revealed, but the scale behind those numbers is the same for everyone. Restricting the set on display never rescales the metric, which is why a source at 61 keeps its 61 as your own coverage widens, and why your number and your neighbour's mean the same thing.
- A rolling 30-day window
- The count is the detections of the last 30 days, recalculated every day. The metric describes the present, and the past stays in the series rather than weighing on today's ranking.
- One scale per engine
- Each engine has its own leading source, so its own 100: an AA always places a source against the leader of ITS engine. The rankings of two engines are close to disjoint, and one AA per engine keeps that relief: each number tells you where to act on the engine it describes.
- A cited source is never zero
- A source the engine cited in the window shows at least 1, however far below the leader it sits. A source that engine did not cite has no AA on it at all, rather than a zero: absent is not zero.
How you turn it into a plan
AI Authority ranks. It takes a list of sources and gives it an order, so the next move is decided rather than guessed.
Pick your engine
Start with the engine that matters most to your market. Its ranking is its own, and the head of its list is rarely the head of another's.
Work from the top
The first entries are where the engine leans hardest. A mention obtained there is repeated more often than the same mention lower down.
Read the series
A snapshot is recorded every day, so an AA is a curve. A source rising on an engine is a source worth going back to.
A number that holds still long enough to be read
Because the leader is read from the same daily snapshot as the count it scales, a past point stays attributable: a source whose AA falls lost citations, and did not lose ground to a leader that moved underneath. That is what turns a metric into a series you can act on.
One metric for the source, two for the answer
AI Authority is a property of a SOURCE: how hard a given engine leans on a given site. Two neighbouring metrics describe the ANSWER that does the citing: how often an answer names a source at all, and how many distinct names it carries when it does. Together they say how much room an answer holds, and AI Authority says which part of that room is worth the work.
AI Coverage
The share of an engine's answers that name at least one source. It says how often there is a source to be, engine by engine.
What AI Coverage measuresAI Density
How many distinct sources an answer names when it names any, counted over sourced answers only. It says how many places there are on the list.
What AI Density measuresMultiplied together, the two give the average number of distinct sources an answer carries: the number of places on offer. AI Authority tells you which of them to go for first.
Common questions
What is AI Authority?
AI Authority (AA) is a metric from 0 to 100 that says how much a given AI engine leans on a given source, where 100 is the source that engine cites most. It is a count of detections over a rolling 30-day window, scaled against the leading source of the entire corpus of sources Epovest knows, and it is computed separately for each engine. Epovest publishes it on every source of its Atlas, so a list of sources to appear in comes with an order.
How is AI Authority calculated?
AA = 100 x the detections of the source / the detections of that engine's leading source, over the same 30-day window and read from the same daily snapshot. It is a count put on a scale, with no constant to calibrate and no weighting to arbitrate, which is what makes a movement attributable: an AA that rises rose because the engine cited that source more.
Is AI Authority computed only on my own sources?
No. The scale is computed over the entire corpus of sources Epovest knows, across every survey run on the platform. You read the AA of the sources your own surveys revealed, but the 100 those numbers are measured against is the leader of the whole corpus. That is what makes the metric stable: restricting the set on display never rescales it, so a source at 61 keeps its 61 as your coverage widens, and your number means the same thing as anyone else's.
How is AI Authority different from a domain authority score in SEO?
They answer different questions. A domain authority score in SEO estimates how a site is likely to rank in search results, from link signals. AI Authority counts something observed instead: how often an AI engine actually leaned on that source when answering real prompts, over the last 30 days. It is measured per engine, from archived answers, which is why the same domain can sit high on one engine and low on another.
Why does the same source have a different AI Authority on each engine?
Because each engine has its own leading source, so its own scale, and because engines genuinely read different things. The rankings of two engines are close to disjoint on the same market. Keeping one AA per engine preserves that: it tells you a source is worth the effort for one audience and a different source is worth it for another.
How do I use AI Authority to prioritise my work?
Pick the engine that matters most to your market, sort your Atlas by its AI Authority, and work the list from the top. The first entries are the sources that engine leans on hardest, so a mention obtained there is repeated more often than the same mention lower down. Record each corroboration you obtain with its date, and the citation curves tell you what it was followed by.
How is AI Authority different from AI Coverage and AI Density?
They describe different objects. AI Authority is a property of a SOURCE: how much a given engine leans on a given site, on a scale where 100 is the site that engine cites most. AI Coverage and AI Density are properties of the ANSWER: how often an answer names at least one source, and how many distinct sources it names when it does. AI Authority ranks the sources to work on; the other two say how often, and alongside how many others, a source gets named at all.
