Reddit in AI answers: Gemini's most cited domain, three citations out of 1,945 on ChatGPT
Founder of Epovest
Measured from Jul 6, 2026 to Jul 31, 2026 AI engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity
Between July 6 and July 31, 2026, we archived 1,427 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity: every answer produced over that window by the weekly trackers running on Epovest, asked verbatim through the engines' official interfaces. On that corpus, reddit.com is the most cited domain in Gemini's answers and the second most cited in Perplexity's. The same domain ranks 102nd on ChatGPT, with 3 citations out of 1,945. Claude cited it zero times in 359 answers, and read it zero times. Same questions, same window: four different maps of the same web.
What was measured
The corpus is the complete answer history of the trackers running on Epovest over the window: questions asked word for word on a weekly cadence, answers archived in full with the sources each engine cited. The question sets span unrelated markets; the most cited domains below run from travel editorial to marketing tooling. We count citations at the registrable-domain level, the same unit as our Atlas. Every host in this corpus resolved to a registrable domain, so every number below keeps its full denominator.
- ChatGPT0.15%
- Claude0%
- Gemini1.62%
- Perplexity5.70%

In the product, the same photo reads through AI Authority, the 0 to 100 scale of our Atlas: 100 on Gemini, 98 on Perplexity, 6 on ChatGPT, and an empty cell on Claude. A domain an engine has not cited in the window shows no score at all: absent is not zero. The Atlas number and the citation counts above are two different units. The Atlas counts the surveys where a domain served; this study counts every citation. Both come with their denominators.
The same 98 does not weigh what the 100 weighs
AI Authority is scaled per engine, deliberately. 100 marks the most cited domain of that engine, every other score is a share of that engine's leader, and the four ladders share no rungs. The counts behind the scores make the point better than a definition: reddit.com's 100 on Gemini is 62 citations, and its 98 on Perplexity is 265, four times as many, because Perplexity's leader sits far higher (youtube.com, 343 citations). Reading the two scores on one axis, or averaging them, would erase exactly what the measurement found: each engine has its own citation regime, its own leaders, its own long tail.
Four engines, four source regimes
The contrast goes well beyond one domain, and it extends what our site-profiles study measured engine by engine in July.
ChatGPT concentrates. Its ten most cited domains carry 29.4% of its 1,945 citations, and the top of its ranking on this corpus is editorial and institutional: lonelyplanet.com, nationalgeographic.com, unesco.org.
Gemini spreads. 1,522 distinct domains for 3,836 citations, a top ten at 8.8%, the flattest distribution of the four, with community platforms at the very top: reddit.com first, youtube.com second.
Perplexity searched the web on every answer we archived, 350 out of 350, and its podium is entirely community platforms: youtube.com, reddit.com, facebook.com.
Claude cites the least: 764 citations across 359 answers, and 198 of those answers, more than half, were composed without searching the web at all. When it does read, citing is a separate decision: Claude read youtube.com pages five times in the window and cited them zero times, the behavior our YouTube study documented at length. reddit.com appears nowhere on Claude's map: zero citations, zero pages read.
The plumbing behind each number
Nothing above says one engine is right. It says the four engines do not read the same web, and for reddit.com the public record documents the why in unusual detail.
Since February 2024, Google holds a content licensing agreement with Reddit, reported at approximately $60 million per year. Reddit's IPO filing that month disclosed $203 million of content licensing contracts in total. On our window, Gemini is the engine where reddit.com ranks first.
On May 16, 2024, OpenAI announced its own partnership with Reddit, with access to Reddit's data API to "better understand and showcase Reddit content". Our window still counts 3 reddit.com citations out of 1,945 for ChatGPT. A data agreement is a training and display right, not a citation pipeline, and measured citations are the only place where that difference shows.
In June 2024, Reddit announced tighter crawler access under its Public Content Policy. By late July 2024, reporting found that Bing and other search engines no longer returned fresh Reddit results, leaving Google as the only search engine with full crawl access. As of July 31, 2026, reddit.com/robots.txt reads, for all user agents: "Disallow: /".
On June 4, 2025, Reddit filed suit against Anthropic, the publisher of Claude, over data scraping. On March 30, 2026, the case was remanded to California state court. On our window, Claude is the engine where reddit.com does not appear at all.
On October 22, 2025, Reddit filed suit against Perplexity AI and three data providers, SerpApi, Oxylabs and AWM Proxy, alleging that its content was obtained through scraped Google search results. The defendants have moved to dismiss, and the motions were argued on June 30, 2026. Perplexity is the engine where we measure reddit.com's highest citation count, 265.
On July 22, 2026, CNBC reported that Reddit may not renew the Google agreement as its term nears its end.
Every fact above carries its date because the plumbing moves, and when it moves, the maps follow.
What this makes worth doing
Three moves follow directly from the measurement.
Read your visibility engine by engine, never on average. The four regimes above are one domain seen four ways, and a brand's own map is no different. A score that looks identical on two engines can sit on citation volumes four times apart, and a merged number would hide both.
Match your surfaces to the regimes your market actually meets. The questions your buyers ask decide which engines matter for you, and each regime rewards different ground: community threads and video transcripts carry the top of Gemini's and Perplexity's rankings, editorial and institutional pages carry ChatGPT's, and half of Claude's answers are composed from the model's own knowledge, where the work is being part of it.
Treat the map as dated, and remeasure. This study is the first wave of a series, frozen on a declared window with its parameters recorded. The agreement behind Gemini's side of the map is publicly reported to be approaching its term. When it resolves, either way, we will publish the next wave against this baseline: same unit, same parameters, same denominators.
